Patra almost missed the news entirely. The Queen of the Pack deejay was so wrapped up in prepping for interviews that she didn’t open the message from the Caribbean Music Awards until days after it landed in her inbox.

When she finally read it, the delay didn’t soften the blow one bit. The CMA organisers were handing her their Lifetime Achievement Award, and it stopped her cold.

I got very emotional and it put me in a sense of realisation and meditation,” Patra told the Jamaica Observer. “I looked back at where I used to be as an artiste and it was very humbling.”

For a woman who has spent decades riding

For a woman who has spent decades riding the ups and downs of the music business, the moment felt bigger than another trophy on the shelf.

“Going there to pick up the award, healthy, and still being able to do something that I love, was a feeling I still can’t put into words,” she said.

She also admitted something a lot of working artists will recognise. Between the next show, the next song and the next move, it’s easy to forget to look back.

Sometimes as artistes, we know what we’ve done,

“Sometimes as artistes, we know what we’ve done, the work we’ve put in but sometimes, the reflection really drives that home,” she said.

Her story started in the countryside, with a young girl entering talent contests on school stages before graduating to bigger competitions.

She broke into dancehall at a time when men far outnumbered women, and she arrived braced for pushback.

What she found, by her account,

What she found, by her account, was a scene that lifted her up instead. “I always wanted to be a superstar and take my country to the world, and they really facilitated my growth,” she said.

Patra also made a point of learning how the business actually works. That meant understanding the people behind the scenes who get records into listeners’ ears.

I made sure to educate myself on the business, and through that process I learnt to care for and appreciate the works of those behind the scenes,” she explained.

Here’s the part fans will care about most

Here’s the part fans will care about most. After stepping away for a while, Patra has signed a new distribution deal through J House and Sony Orchard, and she’s not being shy about it. “People haven’t seen anything yet. Patra is warming up,” she said.

The plan is two albums in the first quarter of 2027, pointed in very different directions. One will lean into what she calls her personal “Patra vibes,” while the other jumps headfirst into house music.

She insists both will still sound like her. “It’s going to be two different vibes, but it will still represent me; my image, my sensuality, my attitude, everything,” she said, adding that the projects will carry a message and are built to make people feel good.

There’s a sense of liberation in how she

There’s a sense of liberation in how she talks about it. “Now, I can do more than one genre of music,” she said, hinting at surprises on both records.

Fans can already hear where things are heading with two new singles, Me So Sexy and No Threat.

No Threat is about reclaiming her individuality while tipping her hat to those who came before, and Me So Sexy is the lead single from the J House Vol 1 project, with a video on the way.

She’s also lined up for the Rock The Bells Cruise, putting her back on the kind of live stage where she first made her name.
