HomeMusicFolk and Roots Artists Represented by Eric Alper Earn Eight 2027 Canadian…
Five acts, seven categories and eight nominations. That’s the tally for the folk and roots artists working with Toronto’s Eric Alper at the 2027 Canadian Folk Music Awards. The 22nd edition of the CFMAs takes place April 8 to 11, 2027, in Sydney, Cape Breton (Unama’ki), Nova Scotia.
Ottawa’s Angelique Francis Band leads the roster with three nominations for ‘Not Defeated.’ The album is up for Ensemble of the Year. Angelique Francis is nominated for Contemporary Singer of the Year, and she and Kiran Francis share a nod for Producer(s) of the Year. Producing the record themselves gave the family full control of its sound, from blues and gospel to soul and folk.
Winnipeg’s Cara Luft earns two nominations, for Solo Artist of the Year and Contemporary Singer of the Year. Both are for ‘My Heart Will Always Be,’ her first solo album in 13 years. She was a founding member of The Wailin’ Jennys, and the new record marks a homecoming to her own voice and songs.
Chris McKhool, the Toronto violinist and founder
Chris McKhool, the Toronto violinist and founder of the multiple JUNO-nominated Sultans of String, is up for Children’s Album of the Year with ‘Little Leaf.’ Doug Taylor of Gentlemen Of The Woods is nominated for Album Artwork of the Year for ‘November Embers.’ Irish Millie rounds out the list with a Young Performer(s) of the Year nomination for ‘Can You See Me?’
Founded in 2005, the Canadian Folk Music Awards celebrate Canadian folk music in all its forms. Nominees and recipients are chosen through a two-stage jury process, with jurors drawn at random from the folk community.
