In The Dark will tour the UK for the first time this autumn, taking its critically acclaimed darkness concerts out of London and into cathedrals and historic venues. London audiences get something new as well: PULSE, a production created for the tour, while the rest of the country gets the existing show, HUSH.
The 70 minute performance happens in complete darkness. A company of 30 musicians and vocalists moves silently through the room, entirely unamplified, around a seated audience wearing eye masks. There is no stage and no lighting. With sight taken out of the equation, the sound becomes a moving 360 degree wall of live music that swells and recedes around every seat.
The autumn run opens at Bristol Cathedral on 29 October, then calls at Chichester Cathedral, St Albans Cathedral, All Saints in Hove, Tewkesbury Abbey and Guildford Cathedral. London dates sit alongside that route at St John’s Hyde Park, Southwark Cathedral and St Andrew’s Holborn. More dates are still to be announced. Each listed date has two performances.
These buildings are part of the show
These buildings are part of the show. Centuries old and built to carry sound, each room’s acoustic shapes the music as much as the players do. The company adapts the movement of the sound to the architecture of every venue.
Outside the capital, the tour presents HUSH, built around slowing down and switching off the outside world. Arrangements draw on songs by Sigur Rós, Coldplay, Ólafur Arnalds, Mumford & Sons and others. London dates debut PULSE, a more propulsive, rhythm driven production from the same musicians, with reworkings of songs by M83, Nils Frahm, The Cinematic Orchestra, Bon Iver and Peter Gabriel.
Reviews of earlier performances have been strong. Immersive Rumours called it “an eerily beautiful and emotional experience… unlike any performance we’ve ever attended.” London Theatre Reviews, awarding five stars, wrote: “You aren’t just listening to a concert; you are sitting inside the instrument.” The Telegraph described “a musical experience cleverly contrived to engender mystical feelings,” and The Live Review called it “an hour of pure, unadulterated magic.”
Andrea Cockerton founded In The Dark in Cambridge
Andrea Cockerton founded In The Dark in Cambridge in 2017. Sold out early shows grew into a full London season in 2024, played by musicians drawn from the West End, the Royal College of Music, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and other leading institutions. That season won the Offies Assessors’ Choice award. The company has since presented more than 60 performances to over 8,000 people, including January dates at St Andrew’s Holborn. That church returns to the diary on 26 November.
Tickets are on sale nowm £38 and London PULSE tickets from £48, booking fees included. A sleep mask comes with the ticket. Audiences stay seated, and doors close at the advertised start, with latecomers not admitted
