Nigerian and German officials have agreed to deepen bilateral cooperation in peace and security, democratic governance, and economic reforms to promote sustainable development. Discussions focused on sharing expertise in federal state management, expanding partnerships in the creative economy, and supporting small businesses to create jobs for young people. Both nations emphasized the importance of technical training and institutional capacity-building to drive inclusive economic growth.

Nigeria and Germany have called for stronger cooperation in peace and security, democratic governance, economic reforms and institutional development as both countries seek to deepen their longstanding relationship and promote sustainable economic growth.

Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Bagudu, said peace, security and democratic governance were essential to achieving lasting economic progress, adding that both countries needed to strengthen cooperation in managing migration sustainably. Bagudu noted that Nigeria and Germany, as federal states, had valuable experience to share in economic management, governance and institutional development. He said stronger bilateral relations would enable both countries to learn from each other and develop partnerships that would support inclusive and sustainable economic development.

The meeting also examined opportunities to expand cooperation in the creative economy, support small businesses and strengthen institutional capacity, with both countries seeking to create more opportunities for young people and attract productive investment. Minister of State for Industry, Senator John Enoh, said Nigeria was committed to diversifying its economy through manufacturing, entrepreneurship, industrialisation, digital innovation and the creative economy.

He said stronger cooperation with Germany could help local businesses expand, improve industrial capacity and create jobs, particularly for young people. Enoh also commended Germany, especially its development agency, GIZ, for supporting skills development and institutional capacity-building in Nigeria. The Nigerian government wants to strengthen technical and vocational training to equip workers with skills required by industries and businesses.

Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning,

Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite, said industrialisation, agricultural development, infrastructure investment and youth empowerment were important to increasing productivity, creating jobs and reducing irregular migration. She called for sustained development financing and stronger partnerships with German institutions to support Nigeria’s economic priorities. Uzoka-Anite specifically proposed financing arrangements modelled on Germany’s KfW framework to promote inclusive growth and sustainable economic development.

The KfW framework refers to Germany’s development finance system, which supports investment and development projects. However, the statement did not disclose any approved financing arrangement, funding amount or agreement arising from the meeting. The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Dr Deborah Odo, also commended Germany’s support for Nigeria’s development priorities, including agriculture, renewable energy, skills development and institutional capacity-building.

She said Nigeria remained committed to ensuring that joint programmes reflected its national development priorities and delivered lasting benefits to citizens. The Federal Government said its broader engagement with Germany would focus on economic cooperation, food security, industrial development, investment, skills acquisition, renewable energy and sustainable job creation. Stefinger also acknowledged Nigeria’s economic potential, saying both countries could benefit from sharing experiences in implementing economic reforms. He expressed optimism that closer cooperation would strengthen the longstanding relationship between the two countries and promote sustainable development and mutual prosperity.

Agriculture was another major area of discussion, with the Nigerian government seeking stronger cooperation to increase domestic food production, reduce food imports and improve farmers’ productivity. Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, said the Federal Government was committed to transforming the agricultural sector and strengthening food security. He said the government was pursuing measures to expand irrigation, improve access to agricultural finance and modern technologies, reduce post-harvest losses and promote farming methods that could withstand climate-related challenges.

Kyari also stressed the need to support smallholder farmers, women and young people through mechanisation, research and agribusiness opportunities. According to him, higher agricultural productivity would create employment, strengthen rural economies and contribute to sustainable economic growth. Improved agricultural production is also expected to help Nigeria reduce its reliance on imported food by strengthening the capacity of local farmers to meet domestic demand.
