Canton Strategic just made history by tokenizing its own shares, while a string of blockbuster deals landed on the Canton Network in one week. But Canton Coin barely flinched, and the reason why reveals a hidden tension at the heart…

The Crypto Desk desk. Editor: Sam Daodu.

Canton Strategic Holdings(NASDAQ: CNTN) announced on October 29, 2026, that its shares are set to become the first tokenized U.S. stock, with trading expected as early as November 2 on TSV, a platform designed for tokenized securities. A tokenized stock is a blockchain-based version of a traditional share, and Fairmint, an SEC-registered transfer agent, will handle the issuance. This news raises the question of what it means for Canton Coin holders.

The announcement followed a busy week for the Canton Network. On October 28, DTCC, the clearing house central to U.S. stock settlement, launched its Tokenization Servicewith 20 participants. Just two days later, Canton revealed thatUber(NYSE: UBER | UBER Price Prediction) completed a pilot program in which it purchased atokenized money market fundfromFranklin Templeton(NYSE: BEN) using tokenized deposits fromHSBC(NYSE: HSBC), which are bank deposits recorded on a blockchain.

Despite this news,Canton Coin(CRYPTO: CC), which pays for activity on the Canton Network, has seen little movement. As of October 31, CC trades at $0.097, up 2.1% over 24 hours but down 19.4% over 30 days. It ranks 27th by market value at about $3.88 billion.

CC trades nearly 50% below its peak of $0.194 on February 3, 2026. To double from its current value, CC would need to reach approximately $0.194 again.

Following the announcement, Canton Strategic’s stock dipped, closing at $1.95 on October 30, down 4.9% for the day, although it remains up 4.8% for the week.

Canton Strategic Earns Fees, but Its Balance Sheet Runs on CC

Canton Strategic, formerly a biotech company named Tharimmune, launched its Canton strategy in November 2025. The transition was completed when it sold off its Gravitas Life Sciences subsidiary in July 2026, and the company holds 3.71 billion CC.

The company’s larger focus is its “locking-as-a-service” business, which began in April 2026. As part of this service, Super Validators—operators of the network’s transaction-ordering service—must keep a minimum amount of CC locked. This lets Canton Strategic lock coins for these validators and earn interest, a share of network rewards, and equity grants.

In the second quarter, this business segment generated $1.3 million, while Canton Strategic’s own validation work as a Super Validator earned an additional $191,000.

However, CC’s value moves the company’s profit line. The drop in CC below the company’s average purchase price led to a $23.7 million unrealized loss on the balance sheet, an accounting loss on coins it still owns, contributing to a net loss of $19.3 million in the second quarter, or 8 cents per share from continuing operations.

The market appears skeptical, as the company’s market value is $155 million compared to shareholders’ equity of $455 million.

How Do Canton Strategic’s Tokenized Shares Differ From Owning CC?

According to the announcement, the new tokenized shares will provide the same rights as Canton Strategic’s Nasdaq shares and are expected to trade continuouslya pool of assets, so buyers don’t have to wait for a matching seller

Mark Wendland, the CEO, runs a company that holds 3.71 billion CC, so he stands to benefit from the network’s success. He emphasized that the stock and the coin are distinct, calling the stock “a differentiated way to gain exposure to the network’s adoption.”

Why Tokenized Stock Trades Burn So Little CC

It remains unclear how buyers will pay for the tokenized shares. If these shares are traded against a stablecoin or atokenized deposit, CC’s role may be limited to covering network fees, which are small. CC pays for “traffic” on the network—essentially, messages sent through its Global Synchronizer—where fees are determined in dollars but paid by burning CC, permanently removing it from circulation.

Fees are based on message size, not the monetary value of the transaction, meaning a large stock trade doesn’t necessarily burn more CC. The Uber pilot followed this model, as Uber used bank money to purchase fund shares, while CC was likely used only for traffic fees. DTCC’s network participants can skip CC entirely by using its private Besu network.

Do CIP-0129 and Canton Strategic Help CC Holders?

More CC burning is scheduled for 2027 after Super Validators approve CIP-0129in October. Under it, dedicated synchronizers, which are private ordering services that major institutions run for themselves, are set to burn CC for traffic instead of paying a license fee to Digital Asset, the company that built Canton.

That burning is set to begin in the first quarter of 2027. However, the network still mints more CC than it burns, and the volume discounts in the pricing proposal still to come may allow larger users to pay less CC for transactions. The locking-as-a-service model could reduce demand for CC since participants can meet their locking requirements using coins the company already owns.

What Needs to Happen for CC to Double?

The November 2 launch helps Canton Strategic more than it helps CC, which gets small traffic fees. For CC to reach about $0.194, a venue, DTCC, or a bank would have to make CC the asset that trades are paid in, which the announced deals do not do, and burning would have to exceed minting, which is the most important step.

The first test comes on November 2, when TSV’s first CNTN trades show what buyers pay with. So what would have to happen for Canton Coin to double? A venue pricing tokenized stocks in CC, or more CC burned than minted.
