As Alabama voters head to the polls on Tuesday, they will decide on four constitutional amendments. These amendments vary in nature.
Amendment One would create a process for replacing a Lieutenant Governor if the position becomes vacant. If the office becomes vacant within the first two years of the person’s term, a special election would be held to elect a new lieutenant governor.
Amendment Two gives counties ways to consolidate their school systems. If enacted, this would not force any schools to consolidate, but it would allow school systems in the same county to consolidate if they choose, and it would empower the state school to commission an impact study on the potential effects, outline procedures to contest consolidation, and require the Alabama Board of Education to create rules for it.
Amendment Three would require schools to recite the Pledge of Allegiance daily, and require local school boards to create rules for student prayer.
Amendment Four would require K-12 schools in the state to play the National Anthem on a weekly basis at each school
