Bangladesh has secured an additional $140 million in financing from the World Bank to continue the Chattogram Water Supply Improvement Project, which aims to expand access to safe, reliable and climate-resilient water supply in the port city.
The government and the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA) signed the financing agreement yesterday (4 November).
Economic Relations Division Secretary Shahriar Kader Siddiky and World Bank Division Director for Bangladesh and Bhutan Jean Pesme signed the agreement.

The project, launched in 2025 and scheduled to run until December 2030, is being implemented by Chattogram Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Wasa) under the Local Government Division.
The additional financing will help complete the project’s targets, following the reallocation of $140 million from its original $240 million allocation to the Contingency Emergency Response Component (CERP).
The project aims to improve water supply and sanitation services in Chattogram and strengthen the financial and operational performance of Chattogram Wasa.
The new financing is equivalent to 102.30 million special drawing rights (SDR) and comes from the IDA’s Scale-up Window–Shorter Maturity Loan facility.
The loan has a 12-year repayment term, including a six-year grace period, with no interest, service charges or commitment fees on the withdrawn amount.
